However, from time to time, travelers report signs that the pyramids are not entirely dead. Lights have been seen moving beneath their surfaces where no windows or openings exist. Low tones have been heard coming from within them on otherwise quiet nights. Animals sometimes refuse to approach the structures, while at other times great numbers of birds gather around them without apparent cause. A few witnesses have claimed to see figures dressed in brilliant, unfamiliar colors standing near a pyramid at dawn or dusk, only to vanish when approached.

There are also stories of people disappearing near one pyramid and being found days or even years later near another. Most remember nothing of the journey. Some insist that only moments passed, even though the world outside had continued without them. Others return speaking unfamiliar words or carrying objects made from materials that no craftsman can identify.

Attempts to enter the pyramids have produced inconsistent results. Some appear to be solid structures without doors, seams, or interior spaces. Others contain narrow passages or chambers that seem to shift between visits. An entrance found one day may be gone the next, while a wall previously believed solid may open without warning. Maps made of pyramid interiors rarely agree with one another, even when drawn by careful explorers.

Many rulers have attempted to claim the pyramids within their territories, but none has gained lasting control over them. Fortifications built around a pyramid have sometimes been abandoned after unexplained disappearances, strange illnesses, or nights during which every guard experienced the same dream. Priests, magicians, scholars, and treasure seekers continue to study them, yet no one has discovered a reliable method of awakening or commanding the network.

The most troubling possibility is that the Agilians did not die or depart. Some believe they remain somewhere within the pyramid network, waiting for a time known only to them. Others believe that whatever destroyed or displaced the Agilians still moves through the passages between the pyramids.

Whether the pyramids are tombs, gateways, weapons, refuges, or something for which the people of the present age have no name remains one of the greatest mysteries of the land.
